3 Ways to Conquer Fear

“Whew, I haven’t talked to you all since last year! (Get it? LOL!)” Anyhoo, aside from my corny jokes I do have something very serious to discuss. Last week, I did something so fearless. This thing takes the courage of 20 warriors and 10 mighty lions! I did a Facebook Live! Okay, Okay I know you all love my humor because that doesn’t sound like much, but for me that is a huge feat. It took a lot for me to do it. I was so fearful, so much so that when I thought about it I literally trembled. TREMBLED. Ain’t that crazy?

I had a fear of speaking up and allowing people to hear my voice. This fear caused me to stir up different reasons not to do a live. I told myself, “I don’t want people to think I’m trying to be like them or nobody wants to hear what I’m saying and I don’t have the personality to be behind the camera.” Thankfully, even after thinking up all of these insecurities the little piece of confidence began to rise up. Once I thought about the decision I began to take the necessary steps. Ultimately, there are 3 things I did to conquer my fear and you should try them:

  1. Talk to yourself. Keep telling yourself until you believe it. The morning that I decided that today will be the day I’m putting my face on the camera I had to talk myself and say, “No matter what, when I get home from work I’m doing this.” This self talk helped to get me motivated and pumped up.
  2. Beware of obstacles that will come to change your mind. I promise you there will be something that happens to make you doubt the decision that you have made. Whether it is negative self talk, or a bad day at work, etc. I know because it happened to me. But because I was able to identify those things as a distraction, I was able to continue talking to myself and keeping my mind on my plan.
  3. Just do it. When I got home from work that day and picked up my phone I just did it. I jumped on camera. The more you wait to conquer your fear the more time you are susceptible to distractions. So just do it, Sista!

When I did my live, I’m not going to lie it was really awkward, but I was so satisfied because I conquered my fear despite the obstacle. It was so worth it. Conquering that fear has opened another door and given me capacity to tackle other fears.
