“Whew, I haven’t talked to you all since last year! (Get it? LOL!)” Anyhoo, aside from my corny jokes I do have something very serious to discuss. Last week, I did something so fearless. This thing takes the courage of 20 warriors and 10 mighty lions! I did a Facebook Live! Okay, Okay I know you all love my humor because that doesn’t sound like much, but for me that is a huge feat. It took a lot for me to do it. I was so fearful, so much so that when I thought about it I literally trembled. TREMBLED. Ain’t that crazy?
I had a fear of speaking up and allowing people to hear my voice. This fear caused me to stir up different reasons not to do a live. I told myself, “I don’t want people to think I’m trying to be like them or nobody wants to hear what I’m saying and I don’t have the personality to be behind the camera.” Thankfully, even after thinking up all of these insecurities the little piece of confidence began to rise up. Once I thought about the decision I began to take the necessary steps. Ultimately, there are 3 things I did to conquer my fear and you should try them:
- Talk to yourself. Keep telling yourself until you believe it. The morning that I decided that today will be the day I’m putting my face on the camera I had to talk myself and say, “No matter what, when I get home from work I’m doing this.” This self talk helped to get me motivated and pumped up.
- Beware of obstacles that will come to change your mind. I promise you there will be something that happens to make you doubt the decision that you have made. Whether it is negative self talk, or a bad day at work, etc. I know because it happened to me. But because I was able to identify those things as a distraction, I was able to continue talking to myself and keeping my mind on my plan.
- Just do it. When I got home from work that day and picked up my phone I just did it. I jumped on camera. The more you wait to conquer your fear the more time you are susceptible to distractions. So just do it, Sista!
When I did my live, I’m not going to lie it was really awkward, but I was so satisfied because I conquered my fear despite the obstacle. It was so worth it. Conquering that fear has opened another door and given me capacity to tackle other fears.
So, I’d like to present a challenge. Is there something that you are too fearful to do? If the answer is yes (if it is no you’re lying), I challenge you to take the 3 steps to conquering your fear and I want to hear about it! Please use the comment box below to share.
