Hello my bolder sisters, I hope your 2018 is off to an amazing start.
As I think about what 2018 looks like for the Bolder Sister Blog, one thing is for sure, I want to continue to inspire you by sharing new stories, products and putting the spotlight on women who are living their best, bold life. And what better way to kick the year off right than by highlighting bolder sister, Kristy Chong, the founder and CEO of ModiBodi, a modern underwear line for real everyday women like you and me. Check out my interview with Kristy, and definitely check out ModiBodi.
What was the inspiration behind Modibodi? Why did you feel it was important for women to have a product like this one?
Kristy: Modibodi is underwear and swimwear for everybodi. It all started in Seattle, after the birth of my second child, I was doing a lot of running and traveling and came to the realization that my underwear was failing to protect me from sweat and the occasional bladder weakness. I started to think about all the times as a woman underwear fails us.
For the 1 in 3 women with light incontinence and for every menstruating women, most can recall stories of that embarrassing situation in which her underwear failed to protect her from a leak, or they have endured years of using inconvenient, uncomfortable and eco-damaging disposable hygiene to stay protected. I wanted create a whole new product category for women that helps them better manage menstrual flow or incontinence, and to reduce the amount of single-use products ending up in landfill and damaging our environment. Modibodi is fashionable, sustainable, hi-tech, super comfortable underwear that totally replaces the need for disposable hygiene!
I read that you are a social advocate for women’s health issues and rights. Why is that cause so important for you?
Kristy: As the issues of women’s health and rights are so close to my heart, I’ve made it a core pillar from the outset that Modibodi support women in need. We have worked in partnership with initiatives such as Share the Dignity, the School for Life and has established the ‘Give a Pair’ initiative to directly deliver product into the hands of women in need, or raise funds through direct sales of product. I’ve recently commenced mentoring and presenting through the Global Sisters Network in Australia, working with young women from disadvantaged cultural backgrounds to build their very own business.
As a female founder, I’m on a mission to break long standing societal taboos to create better understanding and support for very common women’s health issues, and I am leading the way by encouraging women to join the conversation and not feel ashamed. Through Modibodi, we are advocates for the ‘real woman’ and building body positivity among girls and women, and consequently do not permit airbrushing or photoshopping of models bodies in any campaigns, and chooses to use models from diverse backgrounds.
The Bolder Sister blog, is all about confidence building and encouraging women to pursue their passions despite any fear. Did you have any moments of fear/failures as you launched your business, and how were you able to move forward anyway?
Kristy: Thankfully all of our failures have been relatively small and haven’t been too costly. But when we fail I let myself feel the disappointment and then I use that energy to put processes in place to prevent that from happening again or to pivot and look at other ways to do it. It’s important to take responsibility for those failures because it makes you stronger in the end.
What’s one thing you wish women knew about being bold, pressing forward or working through fear and self-doubt?
Kristy: Get comfortable with being uncomfortable because in business you will feel uncomfortable for a majority of the time, and that is okay. You have to push out of your comfort zone in order to achieve your goals.
What’s the greatest piece of business or life advice you’ve received that you continue to draw from?Kristy: That you are like a rubber band, you will definitely feel stretched, but you won’t break, you will bounce back!
