Karina is a truth® tour rider. truth® is the longest running national youth tobacco prevention campaign, and its crew of tour riders, including Karina, are on the road for their 18th summer on the Vans Warped Tour. The Riders tour the country, inspiring action and motivating young people to become ‘Finishers’ by ending tobacco use for good. They’ve also shared information from the #STOPPROFILING campaign during the tour. Here’s more from our chat.
As a truth® tour rider Karina hopes to collect a key chain at each state and inspire at least one person to quit tobacco. Being a truth rider has been a dream of hers since 2010, when she encountered truth on tour.
The Bolder Sister: Why are you so interested in the truth® cause?
Karina: So, growing up, my dad would smoke so much. And I always remembered him smelling like cigarettes all the time. And I knew that I didn’t want him to end up like the people from the commercials with the holes in their throats. And, I discovered truth® at Warped Tour, and I talked to one of the truth® advisors, and I remember thinking to myself, I want to do that. I want to work for a cause that is super important to me.
The Bolder Sister: And did your being part of truth® have an impact on your dad?
Karina: Kind of. He doesn’t smoke as much anymore, because I would tell him about it. So, hopefully one day he will stop, like completely.
The Bolder Sister: What do you hope the truth® tours accomplished this summer?
Karina: I hope we get the 6 percent of teens who smoke lower than it is now and inspire people to quit smoking.
The Bolder Sister: What do you wish everyone knew about the tobacco industry and it’s impact or influence on certain communities?
Karina: I wish everybody would pay attention to what big tobacco plants are doing to their customers and also that there’s over 16 million Americans that live with tobacco related illnesses. I just want them to pay attention to what it really does to them, they don’t know how bad it is for them. And also how big tobacco targets communities for their sales, hashtag stopprofiling. There are 4,000 plus chemicals in cigarettes, including 43 known cancer causing compounds and 400 other toxins. I always tell my dad like, “Do you like smoking acetone?” I need some to use on my nail polish.
The Bolder Sister: Wow. What advice would you give to women who want to stand up for a cause they believe in, but may have some fears surrounding it?
Karina: I’m a huge girl power person. Because, when I was growing up, I was very quiet. I never really said what was on my mind. And, literally, being on tour has made me grow to be the person that I am now. To be more outspoken and talk about the things that I am passionate about.
So, my advice, is literally to just speak up. And I know it’s not that easy to do. But you always have someone backing you up, your friends, your family, even strangers. That’s the other thing about you, there’s always someone listening and they might be afraid to speak up, so them seeing your courage will give them the courage to talk about the issues that they care about. Also, just always remember, no one’s opinions about you define you. Like Helen Reddy said “I am woman, hear me roar.’
The Bolder Sister: Well thank you so much Karina. Was there anything else that we should know, or that my readers should know about the tour, or about you?
Karina: Listen to thetruth.com
The Bolder Sister: Perfect. Well thank you so much.
